Name: Nathan Fuller
Title: Senior Graphic Designer
When did you start at communikate et al?
2022
Where did your love of art and graphic design begin?
Even at a young age I was fascinated with design and what differentiated one brand from another, whether that simply be comparing graphics on a t-shirt or my favourite sporting team logos. While my parents didn’t work in an arts industry, they are both creatively minded. Dad is more technical and Mum more arts and craft. They have both definitely been an influence and encouraged me to pursue my passion.
The possibility of a career doing something I love is what lead me to graphic design. A passion for all things art and design has become a natural extension of my career and plays a big part in my life today.
What path led you to communikate et al?
Prior to joining the CK team I had spent my entire career working in boutique design studios. The time came where I was looking for a change, and for me, working in a larger organisation would be a new experience. CK is unique in that it has a dedicated design team, but also offers so much more. For me, it’s the best of both worlds.
What do you most enjoy about your job?
I really enjoy the entirety of the design process, from receiving an initial brief through to the delivery of creative solutions for our clients. I also enjoy the collaboration that comes from being a member of our design team and working closely with suppliers to bring concepts to life… Every day is different!
What do you have a reputation for within the communikate et al office?
(1) Working late and being told to go home.
(2) Being on a first name basis with multiple local lunch spots!
If you could describe yourself in three words, what would they be?
Detail-oriented, genuine and easy-going.
When you’re not at work, where will you be and what will you be doing?
There are a number of possibilities … visiting galleries and exhibitions, watching movies with my wife and son, going to car meets in my 1970s era Mazda, or searching for more mid-century furniture (which technically I don’t need!).
What would be your dream client or project?
Anything to do with the arts or any project that makes a positive impact in some way.
What’s a client or project you’re most proud of in your career?
There are a number I could mention and for many different reasons, but a good example of a project I’m proud of is one from earlier in my career due to the scale of the challenge, the success of the project and amount I learnt from it. At the time my experience was mid-level. During an annual review I expressed an interest in learning more about signage projects.
Shortly there-after, the Design Director asked me to work with him on the wayfinding system for the new State Library of South Australia. This would be my first signage project. Working alongside the client, architect, builder and sign contractor, my role included design, final artwork and project management. Upon completion, the project included approximately 300 signs across one contemporary building and two heritage buildings.
